One of the earliest uses of sculpture was to decorate
walls and other flat surfaces such as doors. These wall sculptures are
most often called reliefs. Both marble and bronze were employed.
Years ago while in Paris and Italy, I became enchanted with the relief work of many famous artists, my favorites being Ghiberti's Florence Baptistry Doors and Manzu's Doors at St. Peter's. Many of my own relief work comes from my life drawings. Bas reliefs like a Belladonna are a sketch in bronze, a study in line and caught light. Others are high relief like La Musa where the female form extends from the panel capturing that mysterious moment when the two dimensional becomes three. Reliefs suit a variety of spaces and are prized because they are so universally applicable to anyone's home. Many collectors purchase two or more smaller reliefs to display together on a wall, while a larger relief can denote any special space, typically over a mantle or outside on a wall in a Sculpture Garden. Prices in this category range from $485 to $12,500 depending on size, difficulty of casting and number in the edition. Call our office at (413) 238-7755 for more information about Relief Sculpture! |
